sphalerite

Whitwell Quarry, Whitwell, Derbyshire, England

3003

In the 1980's an unusual lead and vanadium deposit was discovered in N.E. Derbyshire.  Small flats were found at the base of the permian Dolostone that had a quite different mineralisation from the vein, the flat mineralisation consisting of unaltered galena, barytes and small transparent to transulcent crystals of sphalerite. This specimen shows the form of sphalerite crystallisation associated with galena cubes some embedded in barytes. Ex P. Briscoe collection.  For further details of this mineral occurrence see the Journal of the Russell Society, Volume 24, 2021.
