Sphalerite on Quartz

South Llangynog mine, Llangynog, Powys, Wales

2950

In the 1980s the old tips of South Llangynog mine were worked through by Pentre quarry. Collectors soon after found blocks of mineralised veinstone in the quarry coated in calcite which on removal exposed some of the best sulphide specimens found in Wales. This specimen, from that find, hosts a group of well formed sphalerite crystals perched over a bed of quartz.  Ex. Jim Padden collection
