Kaolinite and mica pseudomorph after Orthoclase

Kaolinite and mica pseudomorph after Orthoclase

Melbur china clay pit, St. Austell, Cornwall, England

2015

Interesting pseudomorphs, known locally in Cornwall as 'Pig's eggs', consist of Kaolinite and Mica replacing Orthoclase crystals and are found at a number of china clay quarries in the St. Austell area. This specimen from Gordon Todd's collection is creamy white, grey where the mica shows and has well defined faces clearly showing replication of a Carlsbad twinned orthoclase crystal.
